When the Vietnamese presented their list of American POWs to be returned, U.S. officials were stunned. They expected many more than the 591 POWs Hanoi planned to release.

As described in the release below, prepared by the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs, Dr. Henry Kissinger countered with a list of 82 names to be immediately accounted for. Some, like Ronald Dodge and David Hrdlicka, were photographed in captivity. For others, like David Demmon and James Mc Lean, the overwhelming intelligence led to only one conclusion. The men were captured.

The Hanoi governement did not respond to requests for information on the 81 men and 1 women listed. Yet, two of the men listed were alive. One, Robert White, was "discovered" in a POW camp located in South Vietnam. He was released April 1, 1973. The other is Robert Garwood.
