AUGUST 12, 1992

Hearings on US Government Post-War POW/MIA Efforts

The committee heard testimony from three members of the Reagan administration on U.S. POW’s and MIA’s from the Vietnam War. The three men testified to the effect that the U.S. government knew U.S. servicemen may have been left behind when the U.S. military withdrew from Indochina, but said the chance to search for the missing servicemen was lost through inaction in the years following the U.S. withdrawal. The administration officials also said that while there was no hard evidence that any U.S. servicemen remained alive in Southeast Asia, it was possible. Lt. Gen. Peroots denied that a conspiracy existed to prevent the investigation of reports of POW’s in Asia, but said the government could have tried harder to investigate.
