November 5-7&15, 1991 Senate Select Committee on POWs/MIAs

NOVEMBER 5, 1991

POW/MIA Issues Day One

The Senate’s new Select Committee on POW’s and MIA’s held its first hearing and began its efforts to resolve some of the unanswered questions about alleged prisoners of war and soldiers who are classified as missing in Southeast Asia. The committee will work to declassify long-secret information, review existing intelligence data, and examine whether the U.S. government has done its best for the missing soldiers and their families. The committee will attempt to insure that there is an effective process for evaluating and responding to reports of live sightings of American soldiers. According to Defense Secretary Cheney there are 2,273 Americans still unaccounted for in Southeast Asia.

POW-MIA Issues Day 2, Part 1

The committee continued its series of hearings on the nearly 2,300 U.S. servicemen unaccounted for in Southeast Asia following the Vietnam War. The committee has been investigating reports that U.S. servicemen are still alive and being held captive in Southeast Asia. The Department of Defense has previously stated there is little credible evidence of U.S. servicemen still alive in Southeast Asia. Witnesses included representatives of the U.S. office in Vietnam investigating reports of POW/MIA’s, and representatives of veterans organizations.
